Story Maps: A History of Food Insecurity in Milwaukee
Milwaukee’s food system is a direct result of historical factors that influenced the ways Milwaukee residents navigate the food system in the present day. These factors include systemic racism, high levels of poverty, a lack of access to fresh food choices in certain areas of the city, and more. Story Maps: A History of Food Security in Milwaukee, created by local historian Reggie Jackson, explores how poverty and structural racism have evolved to create the conditions for an inequitable food system in Milwaukee.
Milwaukee Food Environment Map
With support from Data You Can Use, the Milwaukee Food Council has created this Food Environment map to aid service providers and community members in identifying where food can be accessed in Milwaukee County.
This tool has two geographic maps and one network map. The first map displays the Emergency Food environment of Milwaukee County, including the food banks, pantries, and meal sites where individuals can seek food assistance. The second map displays the Food Access environment of Milwaukee County, including most establishments where food can be purchased, such as grocery stores, farmers markets, convenience stores, and warehouses / supercenters. The Food Network Kumu Map shows the relationships and connections between the various food actors of Milwaukee County.
Milwaukee Food Ecosystem Map
To understand Milwaukee’s Food system, we have been working on a project that begins to map all of the connections between actors within the food system. Below, you can explore how organizations provide services to the city, which of these organizations overlap in the services they provide, and understand what gaps exist in the food system that could provide opportunities for new efforts. As the system changes, the map will be updated at certain points in time to show if the system is changing and, if so, what is happening.
